Everyone is familar with the three main human meals “Breakfast”, “Lunch”, and “Dinner”. Most people are also familar with “Brunch”, a mid-morning meal that can replace breakfast and lunch. A select few may also be aware of a meal called “Lunner” (a.k.a. “Dinch” or “Linner”), a late-afternoon meal that can replace lunch and dinner. However, this is not the end of the story.
Hobbits have six meals: “First Breakfast”, “Second Breakfast”, “Elevensies”, “Afternoon Tea”, “Dinner”, and “Supper”. So, the combinations become more complex. For example, “Dipper” is the meal that can replace dinner and supper.
Interestingly, two of the main human meals (breakfast and lunch) are actually subsets of the Hobbit meals. Breakfast is the replacement for first breakfast and second breakfast, while lunch is the replacement for luncheonsies (luncheon + elevensies) and truncheon (luncheon + afternoon tea).
As a public service, the Bacliff Exploration Society provides the “Know Your Hobbit Meals” diagram in order to promote knowledge about mealtime.
