Horatio Macshearwater, a Royal Navy officer, was a captain of the HMS Solitaire, a ship he won in a game of whist with the Dutchman Grissom Turduckensworth.

In 1823, he discovered Dirk Hartog Island.

In 1836, while on a whale-hunting expedition to the Gulf of Mexico, he took command of the Texas navy during the Battle of Matagorda Bay.
