Viscount Lord High Admiral Laird Sophocles "Sooty" Macshearwater was an officer in the Royal Navy from 1790 to 1878. He started his naval career as a cabin boy at age 6. He quickly rose through the ranks, and gained his own command (the HMS Fiery Gizzard) at age 9.
