Sophocles "Sooty" Macshearwater

Viscount Lord High Admiral Laird Sophocles "Sooty" Macshearwater was an officer in the Royal Navy from 1790 to 1878. He started his naval career as a cabin boy at age 6. He quickly rose through the ranks, and gained his own command (the HMS Fiery Gizzard) at age 9. During his long career, he fought in 6 wars, captured or sunk 279 ships of the line, and personally killed 52 Frenchmen in hand to hand combat. During all that time, he never spent more than 5 consecutive minutes on land. He is buried in Westminster Abbey.
