Horatio Macshearwater, a Royal Navy officer, was a captain of the HMS Solitaire, a ship he won in a game of whist with the Dutchman Grissom Turduckensworth. While on a whale-hunting expedition to the Gulf of Mexico in 1836, he took command of the Texas navy during the Battle of Matagorda Bay.

He was the father of Sophocles "Sooty" Macshearwater.
